Study Permit |
A study permit may be issued to a foreigner intending to study in South Africa for longer than three months at any institution of learning that has been approved by the Department of Home Affairs.
Typically, learning institutions encompass primary, tertiary and any higher educational institutions and depending on the institution concerned study permits are issued for durations up to 3 years.
Study permits do not entitle the holder to conduct work, as defined in the Immigration Act since the applicant should in that case apply for a work permit. However, for learners at higher education institutions, part-time work may be conducted for a period not exceeding twenty hours per week which requires authorisation.
Work in South Africa may also be authorised for those learners that are required to perform practical training as part of his or her studies.

Treaty Permit |
A treaty permit may be issued to a foreigner conducting activities in South Africa in terms of an international agreement to which South Africa is a party. Treaty permits are a service offered by our professional immigration attorneys.
Medical Treatment Permit |

Relatives Permit |
A relative’s permit, including a spousal permit or life partner permit may be issued for a maximum of two years to a foreigner who is a member of the immediate family as defined of a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa and able to prove kinship as defined.
Such citizen or permanent resident must be able to financially support the applicant in an amount of R5000 per month per person to obtain a relative’s permit. Where the applicant for a relative’s permit is a spouse (spousal permit or life partner permit) or dependant minor child the proof of financial support is not required. Retired Persons Permit |
A retired person permit may be issued to a foreigner exceeding a period of 3 months that intends to retire in South Africa provided that such foreigner is able to prove a financial status in the form of a right to a pension, irrevocable annuity, or requirement account.
A foreigner seeking a retired person permit will provide proof that he or she will derive an amount of R20 000 per month as an income for the rest of his or her life or a net worth equivalent to a combination of assets that will realize R20 000 per month to be granted a retired person permit.
A retired person permit is valid for a period of 4 years and is renewable. A retired person’s permit will also allow a foreigner to sojourn into South Africa on a seasonal or continual basis and has found favor with many foreigners who are financially sound and require the flexibility of retiring and still residing in other parts of the world. Asylum Transit Permit |
An Asylum seeker permit may be issued to any person who at a port of entry claims to be an asylum seeker for a period of 14 days only in order for that person to report to a refugee reception officer and apply for asylum at the nearest refugee office in South Africa.
If such person fails to report within this time then that person will become an illegal foreigner and thus become subject to any enforcement actions by the authorities in South Africa.
